Cloth holds more than it shows

Woven upholstery absorbs body oils, sunscreen, sweat, food residue and airborne dust. Because it does so evenly, the decline is invisible until you clean one seat and compare it with the other. Owners are routinely surprised by the color difference.

In a hot climate the oil component is worse. Sunscreen in particular transfers heavily during the summer and leaves a faintly greasy residue that attracts dust, and it needs a cleaner formulated to lift oils rather than a general-purpose spray.

Different fabrics, different rules

• Standard woven cloth seats — hot water extraction, the most effective method
• Alcantara and suede-look microfiber — low moisture cleaning only; saturation permanently mats the nap
• Headliners — never saturated, because moisture dissolves the adhesive holding the fabric to the backing board and causes sagging
• Fabric door inserts — cleaned with controlled moisture to keep water away from speakers and switch wiring
• Perforated panels — moisture managed so nothing runs into the foam beneath

Process

Dry removal first, including pet hair, then pre-treatment matched to the soiling, agitation with a brush appropriate to the weave, then extraction. Individual stains get separate attention before the general pass rather than being scrubbed harder during it.
