The fingernail test

Run a fingernail lightly across the scratch, perpendicular to it. If the nail glides over it, the damage is within the clear coat and there is a good chance it can be polished out entirely. If the nail catches, the scratch has gone through the clear coat and possibly into the color layer — polishing to that depth would remove an unsafe amount of material.

This single test avoids most of the disappointment in this category. We would rather set expectations at the quote stage than after four hours of work.

Categories of damage

• Clear coat scuffs and light scratches — usually removable by polishing
• Wash marring and swirl marks — removable, and the most common request
• Transfer marks, where another object left paint or rubber on your panel — often removable
• Scratches into the base color — improvable in appearance, not removable
• Rock chips — missing paint, requiring touch-up or refinishing
• Key marks and deep gouges through to primer — body shop work

Why partial improvement is sometimes the right choice

A deep scratch can often be made much less visible by softening its edges and clearing the surrounding marring, without eliminating it. On a ten-year-old daily driver that is frequently the sensible outcome — a big visual improvement for a fraction of a respray cost.

What we will not do is chase a single deep scratch until the clear coat around it is dangerously thin. Clear coat failure is worse than a scratch and it cannot be polished back.
