What swirl marks are

Swirl marks are thousands of shallow scratches in the clear coat, oriented in circles or arcs. In shade they are invisible. In direct sun — and San Antonio provides plenty of that — they scatter light into the spider-web pattern that makes a dark car look hazy and grey rather than deep and reflective.

Black, dark grey, dark blue and dark red vehicles show them worst. White and silver hide them almost entirely, which is why owners of light-colored cars are often surprised when a paint depth reading or an inspection light reveals the same damage.

Where they come from

• Automatic tunnel washes with shared brushes and recycled water
• Washing with a single bucket, so grit is returned to the paint on every pass
• Drying with a rough or dropped towel, or with a chamois dragged across grit
• Wiping dust off dry paint with a shop rag or a duster
• Circular polishing with an inappropriate pad by a previous detailer
• Brushing pollen or caliche dust off the car by hand between washes

How they are removed

There is no chemical that removes a swirl. The clear coat around the scratch has to be levelled down to the base of the defect with a machine polisher and an appropriate abrasive — this is paint correction, and swirl removal is its most common application.

Most light to moderate swirling clears in a single polishing stage. Heavier damage needs a compounding pass followed by refinement, otherwise the compound leaves its own haze behind. Products that claim to remove swirls in a bottle almost always fill them temporarily.

Keeping them from coming back

There is little point removing swirls and then returning to the same wash routine. A safe hand wash, clean media, drying with soft towels, and never dry-wiping dust are the essentials. A ceramic coating adds a harder sacrificial surface that resists light marring, which is a common reason owners pair correction with coating in the same visit.
